On September 6th, 2018, Paterson Head Start was awarded “Best Children’s Garden” in The Greenest Place in Paterson Contest held by City Green, Inc. City Green is an urban farming and gardening organization, based in Clifton, New Jersey working to revitalize urban areas through agriculture and educational programming.
The children planted tomatoes, peppers, okra zucchini, watermelon, pumpkin, beans, carrots, cilantro, basil, mint, petunias, lilies, beebalm, zinnias, wildflowers, coneflowers, mums and black eyed susans.
In addition to a certificate they also won a scarecrow for the future garden. Paterson Area Director, Gwendolyn Wright, said, “It was very fulling to watch the children and staff really enjoying the growth process to see the fruits of the planting. For the children, the chance to plant, water, and watch the various plants created many teachable moments.
