Head Start Kids Create Communities

GBCA Head Start teachers guided students through an in-depth lesson about buildings and community. The children worked to create buildings of their choice based on their own interests, experiences and inquiries. The work is a hands-on activity that uses the Creative Curriculum and Studies approach to embed topics such as language, literacy, math, science, arts and technology into the classroom in a way that is developmentally appropriate for the children. Additionally, social-emotional skills are practiced while working in small groups during the creation of communities as the culminating activity. Once the communities were complete, Head Start families were invited to explore the displays and given the opportunity to discuss the project with students and teachers.
